Orientation

Orientation is the beginning of your first in-person day at FIC. It is one of the most important experiences you will have as a student. This is where you will meet the people who will become your friends throughout your studies and the people who will help you to be academically successful. 

Before Orientation Day 

FIC Ready 

Join our FIC Ready Session hosted by our FIC Students team! The virtual sessions are designed to make you feel confident in starting your academic journey at FIC before arriving to Canada and FIC.  

These sessions will help you: 

  • Get to know the resources at FIC and SFU 
  • Get a chance to meet with the FIC Academic Team 
  • Get a chance to meet with FIC’s amazing student leaders who will share their personal experience 
  • Receive Important information relevant to assure your academic success 
  • Receive an overview of what to expect when you arrive in Canada and at FIC 

An email will be sent to all new students with the dates of each session. So be sure to check your emails!

FICSET  

FIC- Sharing Experiences Together (FICSET) is an online asynchronous, free, non-credited Moodle course to prepare yourself for your first semester. It is a compilation of important information and resources to help you succeed as International student in Canada.  

 The course covers topics like: 

  • Essentials to know before arriving in Canada (documentation, accommodation, scam awareness etc) 
  • Essentials to know after arriving in Canada (bank account setup, health insurance, information on responsibility to comply to Study Permit conditions) 
  • Life in Vancouver (Indigenous Culture, sustainability, wildlife, consent etc) 
  • Self-care (health and wellness resources, student well-being) 
  • New Academic Environment (FIC and SFU campus resources, Student support staff, academic integrity etc.) 
  • School-life Balance (personal development, job-hunting awareness, self-advocacy etc) 

New students will automatically be enrolled in this course, and it can be accessed during your whole time at FIC.  

Orientation Day 

Join our team of amazing Orientation Leaders for a day of fun and getting to know FIC. This day is filled with valuable information and opportunities to make new friends and meet friendly FIC staff and instructors. 

Here is what you can expect on your Orientation Day: 

  • Meeting other new FIC students 
  • Get your questions answered by current FIC students and alumni 
  • Connect in-person with your FIC Students Team  
  • Get a campus tour of the FIC Building and the SFU Burnaby Campus   
  • Have a chance to meet some of your Professors
  • Learn how to setup a Canadian Bank account and a Canadian phone number 
  • Lots of fun games and activities 
  • You will be provided a written package with all the necessary information that you can use throughout your studies at FIC

What to bring? 

  • Your Study Permit and Letter of Acceptance 
  • Proof of address, proof of enrolment and your passport (required for bank and phone number setup) 
  • A weather-appropriate outfit 
  • All the questions you might have!
